Hackers associated with Russia, from a group called NoName057(16), attacked the websites of dozens of ministries and state institutions in Austria in September, targeting energy suppliers, public transport systems, and political parties.

This was reported by the Austrian publication Falter.

“In recent days, the websites of dozens of ministries and state institutions in Austria have become targets of virtual attacks, seemingly the work of NoName057(16). In September, the Ministry of the Interior already registered cyberattacks on ministries, administrative bodies, energy suppliers, public transport systems, and political parties in Austria—some websites, such as ÖVP (Austrian People's Party), SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria), and KPÖ (Communist Party of Austria), were taken offline,” the report states.

It notes that “it is no secret that this is being done not only with the knowledge of the Putin regime but even at its direction.”

“Russian hacker groups have close ties to the Kremlin's intelligence services. Their attacks are clearly also part of the hybrid war that Russia has been waging against the 'collective West' not only since the invasion of Ukraine,” the material states.

Additionally, it mentions that large-scale cyberattacks on Austrian websites are occurring due to the alleged “Russophobic” stance of Austria ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday, September 29.
