German companies are indirectly involved in Russian construction in the occupied Mariupol, as stated in the investigation by Tagesschau, the news program of the ARD television channel.

The investigation suggests that the so-called reconstruction of Mariupol, which was occupied by Russian forces two years ago after several months of siege, plays an important role for the Kremlin.

"But who will help them in this project? In annual reports, on the websites of companies, in photos, and in videos – there is evidence and proof that German companies also play an important role in the reconstruction of Mariupol," Tagesschau claims.

Primarily, it concerns the corporation Knauf. Its subsidiary continues to operate in Russia. The corporation itself claims to work exclusively in the Russian market. However, according to the investigation, Knauf building materials are used in the construction in Mariupol, particularly upon the order of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Another company mentioned in the material is a firm from Münsterland in North Rhine-Westphalia – WKB Systems. It manufactures equipment for the production of porous concrete. This equipment, as claimed, is used in the construction in Mariupol.

The main shareholder of the company, as stated in the investigation, is Russian businessman Viktor Budarin. The company supplies its products to a Russian firm owned by the same Budarin. Neither he nor the company are subject to sanctions.

The exact number of civilians killed during the storming of Mariupol is unknown. Judging by the number of burials that appeared during and after the siege of the city, the number could exceed 10,000 people. The city was heavily damaged. Currently, Russian pro-Kremlin media actively cover construction and restoration works.
