New requirements for conscripts to increase the military age will be enshrined in legislation by the next spring conscription, two interlocutors told to Verstka. The Ministry of Defense is developing the corresponding draft law, it can be submitted either by the department itself or by high-ranking parliamentarians. This issue is still under discussion, said one of them. The source claims that it is planned to introduce the bill in the near future, "weeks" are allotted for its full development.
In the document being developed, a new draft age will be fixed - not from 18 to 27, but from 21 to 30 years. The law is planned to be supplemented by by-laws, improving the "transitional period" for the next few years.
Earlier, the idea to gradually increase the age of conscription was voiced by Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. He justified this by the need to strengthen Russia's security in connection with NATO's desire to build up "military potential" near the Russian borders, including at the expense of Sweden and Finland. Prior to this, there were also calls to increase the term of service in the army from one to two years . However, the Kremlin did not support this initiative.
