The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) plans to present a report on the situation of journalists detained in Russian prisons by the end of 2025.
This was stated by the secretary of the PACE Committee, Roberto Fascino, during the 26th meeting of the Council of Europe Steering Committee on Media and Information Society (CDMSI) in Strasbourg, as reported on the website of the National Council for Television and Radio Broadcasting.
According to him, the report will be prepared using an expedited procedure.
“A report regarding the situation of journalists imprisoned in Russian prisons has been registered. It will be prepared using an expedited procedure and presented by the end of next year,” emphasized Fascino.
This report was previously initiated by deputy, vice-chair of the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and chair of the PACE Committee on Culture, Science, Education, and Media, Yevheniya Kravchuk.
In October, PACE adopted a resolution titled “Missing persons, prisoners of war, and civilians detained as a result of the Russian Federation’s aggression against Ukraine.” According to Yevheniya Kravchuk, in her speech at PACE, she mentioned that journalists Dmytro Khilyuk, Iryna Danilovych, Viktoriya Roschina, and many other media workers remain detained.
Additionally, Nariman Dzhelal, a journalist released from Russian captivity and first deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar people, testified at a side event at the Assembly regarding prisoners of war and civilian hostages, advocating for pressure on Russia to release them.
