Croatian President Zoran Milanović has been accused of supporting the Kremlin following his statements about the need for dialogue with Russia, which Prime Minister Andrej Plenković called effectively defending Moscow’s interests and a disgrace for Croatian politics. Milanović said there is no excuse for the lack of dialogue between Western leaders and Russia, as reported by vecernji.

Milanović’s words drew sharp criticism from Prime Minister Plenković, who accused him of actually defending the Kremlin’s position rather than Croatia’s.

“We have him, who for three years has effectively defended the Kremlin’s position more than that of Croatia, the West, and everyone else, and this has been allowed here as if it’s normal,” Plenković told journalists.

He emphasized that Russia is waging an aggressive war against Ukraine, has occupied Ukrainian territories, and is responsible for rising energy prices, millions of refugees, and the destruction of Ukrainian cities.

“Russia is the one that occupied and illegally annexed four Ukrainian regions plus Crimea. Russia is responsible for millions of refugees and displaced persons, for the destruction of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure,” the prime minister reminded.

According to Plenković, the Croatian president’s statements disgrace the country and give the impression that Croatia supports Moscow’s policies.
