The counterintelligence unit of the Security Service of Ukraine foiled another attempt by Russian forces to obtain coordinates for a new missile strike on the industrial infrastructure of Zaporizhzhia.

According to the case materials, the Russian forces targeted production facilities and key electrical substations that supply power to the factories of this frontline city.

To adjust the airstrike, Russian military intelligence (better known as the GRU) recruited a former employee of the local Pension Fund office. She came under suspicion due to her anti-Ukrainian comments on Telegram channels.

To carry out the Russian tasks, the agent surveyed the area, trying to identify industrial and energy facilities.

Additionally, she covertly extracted needed intelligence from an acquaintance, a software engineer at one of the local machine-building enterprises.

The investigation revealed that the suspect coordinated her actions with a GRU officer through an anonymous chat in a messenger app.

SSU counterintelligence agents uncovered the culprit in advance, documented her contacts with the handler, and caught her “red-handed” while photographing the perimeter of a factory’s energy facility.

At the scene, the suspect’s smartphone was seized, containing Google Maps marked with potential “targets” for the Russian forces.

SSU investigators charged the agent under Part 2, Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed during martial law). The suspect is held in custody without the right to bail. She faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
