The training in handling explosive hazards is part of Operation Interflex, led by the UK for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which has been ongoing since July 2022. The operation involves 12 other NATO members and partner countries. Instructors are provided by Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Sweden, and Kosovo.

According to HALO Trust, a non-governmental organization specializing in post-conflict demining, up to two million landmines may have been planted in Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, resulting in the loss of many military personnel and civilians.
