The President’s Office has proposed to Hungarian partners to help restore the St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv, which was damaged by a Russian missile.
This was announced on Facebook by Viktor Mykyta, Deputy Head of the President’s Office.
Mykyta mentioned that on Tuesday, together with Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration (KMVA) Tymur Tkachenko, Deputy Minister of Culture and Strategic Communications Serhiy Belyaev, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Economic Affairs and Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Parliamentary State Secretary Levente Modyor, they visited the St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv, which was damaged by a Russian missile strike in December 2024.
“We proposed to our Hungarian partners to join in financing the restoration of this important historical and cultural landmark for the country, and particularly for the capital. At the same time, we are considering the possibility of submitting a joint application for funding restoration projects with EU support. Working groups from both sides have already started communicating and are preparing a roadmap for the potential involvement of Hungarian partners in the restoration project of St. Nicholas Church,” Mykyta informed.
As a result of missile debris falling in December 2024, windows in the church towers were shattered, some stained glass was damaged, and parts of the building's walls were hit.
The church was built between 1899 and 1909. Despite the war and the need for restoration, thousands of Roman Catholic worshipers continue to attend services there.
