The new Strategy of Ukraine's Maritime Security envisages the implementation of renewable energy projects and the development of maritime infrastructure for the transshipment of liquefied gases, particularly hydrogen.
According to the document published on the Ukrainian president's website Wednesday evening, energy generation from renewable sources is planned within Ukraine's exclusive economic zone, including the creation of micro grid distribution systems based on smart grids.
Regarding liquefied gas transshipment, Ukraine intends to participate in international cooperation to explore opportunities for developing maritime infrastructure for this purpose.
The Strategy also includes the creation and improvement of a system to protect critical maritime energy infrastructure, ensuring its security through the implementation of programs for underwater protection systems, drone, and counter-drone solutions.
The Strategy notes that estimated hydrocarbon resources on Ukraine's shelf in the Azov and Black Seas amount to 2.3 billion tonnes of fuel equivalent, approximately 40% of Ukraine's total oil and gas resources. However, it mentions that only 4-5% of these deposits in the Ukrainian section of the Black Sea shelf have been explored. Within Ukraine's exclusive economic zone, estimated natural gas resources amount to 1751 billion cubic meters, with proven reserves totaling 48 billion cubic meters.
As previously reported, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree on July 17 putting into effect the decision of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine (NSDC) on the new Strategy of Ukraine's Maritime Security. He emphasized that this document takes into account security changes and innovations that Ukraine has ensured, particularly in the Black Sea, and announced plans to discuss its details with partners in the near future.
