Ukraine warns Russia using GPS spoofing to mask sanctioned oil shipments

The Russians are using GPS data spoofing technology so that ships and captains transporting sanctioned oil can avoid accountability.

This was stated on air by the spokesperson for the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk.

“The risks are real and serious. They initially tested this technology (GPS spoofing, signal jamming) quite extensively in the eastern Black Sea, and later it became clear that there are several objectives they achieve this way. The first is spoofing to confuse us. But then the question arose: why do it in the Baltic? Later, an economic aspect appeared: if you spoof GPS coordinates, no one can definitively prove that these ships were loaded at that particular port. This allows them to evade responsibility for the captains and ships transporting sanctioned Russian oil. According to MarineTraffic, it might appear as though it was loaded somewhere in the forest,” he said.

Pletenchuk also noted that for Ukrainian experts, there is no such category as a “shadow fleet,” since all such ships have owners, most of whom are in Europe. According to the spokesperson, the question of pursuing these ships transporting Russian sanctioned oil falls into the political sphere.
