The world premiere of the documentary ‘Kuba & Alaska’, a winner of the proMOTION programme by the Ukrainian Institute, will take place at Sheffield DocFest 2025, one of the UK’s most prestigious documentary film festivals.

Directed by Yehor Troyanovskyi and produced by Olha Bregman, the film tells the story of two frontline paramedics, known by their call signs Kuba and Alaska. Before the war, Kuba worked as a designer and Alaska was in the media industry. Their lives changed dramatically, yet friendship and dedication help them navigate unimaginable challenges.

The documentary captures their strength, courage, and unwavering hope for peace, despite the losses and pain they endure.

‘Kuba & Alaska’ is also part of ARTE Generation Ukraine collection of documentaries.

The Sheffield DocFest programme also includes the following Ukrainian films:

  • My Dear Theo’, dir. Alisa Kovalenko
  • 2000 Meters to Andriivka’, dir. Mstyslav Chernov
  • A Simple Soldier’, dir. Artem Ryzhykov, Juan Camilo Cruz
  • Shards of Light’, dir. Mila Teshaieva,  Marcus Lenz

In addition to film screenings, the festival will also feature a panel discussion titled “There are too many Ukrainian films – No, there are not”, supported by the media platform ARTE.

The discussion will bring together director Mstyslav Chernov, director Yehor Troyanovskyi, Anna Bertolle, CEO, Sales & Acquisitions, Lightdox, and Alexandre Marionneau, Commissioning Editor, Head of International Co-production, ARTE France.

This year, Sheffield DocFest takes place from 18 to 23 June.
