Ukrzaliznytsia has restored the volume of container transportation to pre-war levels, increasing them by 47% in January-September to 197,897 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU), reported Valerii Tkachov, deputy director of the transportation technology and commercial operations department of the company.
"There is a noticeable recovery of pre-war volumes. In the first nine months of 2024, container cargo transportation volumes increased by 47% compared to the same period in 2023, amounting to 197,897 TEU," Tkachov wrote.
According to him, this figure is the highest in the last seven years and exceeds the volumes of the same period in the peak year of 2021 by 7%.
In 2021, the volume of loaded container transportation was 279,792 TEU, but it dropped by 46% in 2022 and rose by 34% in 2023.
Almost 62% of all container transportation occurred in export traffic, Tkachov specified.
He also noted that the undisputed leader among cargoes transported by rail in containers is grain, accounting for about 44% of the total volume. Additionally, 17% of the transported volume consisted of ferrous metals, 7% of meals, 6.6% of oil, 3.5% of synthetic resins, and another 3.5% of starch-molasses industry products.
As of October 1, 2024, Ukrzaliznytsia has already transported 533 intermodal trains, including 82 trains in international traffic.
