On Monday, the UN General Assembly will vote on an updated draft resolution concerning human rights violations in territories of Ukraine temporarily occupied by Russia. The session will begin at 10:00 AM (Kyiv time: 17:00).
The resolution, titled “The Situation of Human Rights in the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine, including the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the City of Sevastopol”, highlights numerous breaches of human rights and international humanitarian law by the Russian Federation. It addresses repression in occupied areas, cases of torture, arbitrary detention, and persecution of journalists, human rights defenders, and the indigenous Crimean Tatar population.
This year’s draft strengthens sections on torture and inhumane treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war and unlawfully detained civilians, condemning Russia’s refusal to provide families with information on the fate and location of their loved ones.
The document also emphasizes adherence to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, noting that widespread and systematic violations of human rights and international humanitarian law could lead to genocide.
The preamble includes a paragraph encouraging efforts for a peaceful resolution of the conflict in accordance with the UN Charter.
