The number of disruptions in the operation of GPS for air transport in Finland since the beginning of 2024 has already tripled compared to the figures for the entire previous year.

This was reported by Helsingin Sanomat.

The publication notes that since the beginning of the year, almost 900 reports of GPS signal reception disturbances have been received. It is reported that before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, such cases were very rare.

The Finnish Transport and Communications Agency identified most of the GPS signal disruptions in the Black Sea region, in the Baltic countries, and near Russia's Kaliningrad.

Similar problems were also detected in the vicinity of Poland and St. Petersburg. Finland does not directly accuse Russia of the disruptions, but notes their increase since the start of the war in Ukraine.

In January, the Institute for the Study of War reported that there were widespread disruptions in GPS systems in Poland and the Baltic region. It was not excluded at that time that this was a result of the operation of Russian electronic warfare systems in the region.

Later, Estonia accused Russia of being behind the increase in cases of satellite signal jamming used by airlines, smartphones, and weapon systems in Eastern Europe.

And recently, Russia jammed the satellite signal of a plane carrying the UK Defense Secretary Grant Shapps as it flew near Russia's Kaliningrad.

Yesterday, a representative of the German Ministry of Defense said that they consider Russia to be involved in disruptions of GPS operations in the Baltic countries.
