The European Commission is working on increasing the maximum supply of electricity to Ukraine. Support needs to be intensified as the challenging winter approaches.
This was stated by European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, according to the European Commission’s website.
"We are working with ENTSO-E to increase the maximum export capacity of electricity to Ukraine," she said.
According to her, due to Russia's ongoing attacks on energy infrastructure, Ukraine has lost nearly half of its electricity production capacity.
"People will be cold and in darkness in the coming months if we do not step up our support," the commissioner said.
Simson noted that the EU has already provided significant support, focusing on repairs, the distribution of generators, and increasing electricity imports from the EU.
Through the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine, the Energy Community, the European Commission, member states, and other donors have mobilized around €510 million for repairing damaged facilities, decentralized gas production, renewable energy, and backup electricity for civilian infrastructure.
"All these efforts need to be intensified as winter approaches to avoid the worst," she added.
