Estonian Intelligence: The West's restraint encourages Russia to escalate

Estonia warns that the West's restraint towards Russia only encourages Moscow to further aggression, stated Kaupo Rosin, head of the Estonian Foreign Intelligence Service, as reported by DW.

According to Roisin, if Putin believes he can avoid serious consequences, he may provoke a global armed conflict.

The Estonian intelligence agency believes that Russia is preparing for a potential military confrontation with the West in the next ten years. However, Roisin noted that the outcome of the war in Ukraine will be a key factor in Moscow's future behavior. He emphasized that the West should aim to weaken Russia, forcing it to address internal issues after a defeat.

Roisin also pointed out that Russia has increased the size of its armed forces and its production of weapons. However, he believes that Moscow will find it difficult to replace losses in personnel and equipment in the coming years.

Estonia continues to monitor Russian subversive activities both within its borders and across Europe. Over the past year, more than 15 individuals connected to such activities have been arrested in Estonia. Roisin stressed that Russia uses subversion to sow tension in Western countries and undermine support for Ukraine.

Roisin supported Estonian President Alar Karis, who criticized Western countries for restrictions on the use of supplied weapons against Russian territory. He believes that Western restraint only plays into Russia's hands, and a weak response to its actions leads to further escalation.

Estonia urges the West to continue supporting Ukraine, including supplying weapons and ammunition. Roisin is confident that Ukrainians can win if NATO countries do not limit their assistance.
