Lithuania sets an example of courage and dignity to all European Union countries, completely abandoning the import of russian energy resources: oil, gas and electricity.

The Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko wrote on his Facebook page.

Today's decisive step of Lithuania shows that the political will allows to find and create ways of energy supply independent of russia, the Energy Minister is convinced.

German Galushchenko noted that Lithuania is now closing its gas needs thanks to the LNG terminal in KlaipÄ—da, and for electricity - through its own production and imports from EU countries through connections with Sweden, Poland and Latvia.

"Ukraine is potentially ready to supply its clean, 70% carbon-neutral electricity, as our energy network is synchronized with the European ENTSO-E," the Minister of Energy of Ukraine added.

German Galushchenko stressed that the message for the whole of Europe was the words of the Lithuanian Minister of Energy Dainius Kreivys that "this is not only an important step towards energy independence, but also a show of solidarity with Ukraine, which opposes russia’s  military aggression."

“Thank you to the people and Government of Lithuania. Its step is the first for the European Union. But I hope that after that the EU will reduce political bargaining over the embargo on russian oil and gas. The lives of our people are the trades that cost Ukraine incredible losses every day,” the Minister of Energy stressed.

He reminded that the decision on the embargo on russian oil was expected in early May. However, the month is coming to an end, but the decision is still being debated due to the position of individual countries.

"The idea of the irreplaceability of russia’s energy resources is a myth. Only the import of electricity from Ukraine to the EU will reduce the consumption of russian gas to 17%. EU countries have enough forces and mechanisms to find a replacement for russia’s energy resources. And Lithuania confirms this," the Minister stressed.

"I hope that May 22, 2022 will be marked in history as the day when Europe began to get rid of energy dependence on russia ," German Galushchenko said.
