As of July 1, Germany has introduced new measures to combat Russia’s "shadow fleet" in the Baltic Sea, requiring all tankers passing through its territorial waters to carry insurance that covers potential oil pollution damage.
This was reported by the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The new requirements apply to tankers operating east of the island of Fehmarn.
If violations occur, ships may face restrictions ranging from increased monitoring to being added to the sanctions list. Currently, 342 vessels in Russia’s "shadow fleet" are already under EU sanctions.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated that the new measures aim to strengthen coordination with regional partners. According to him, Berlin’s goal is to increase pressure on Russia’s shadow fleet while also protecting the Baltic Sea’s ecosystem.
