The Harvard Ukrainian Research Institute has created an online archive with open access to research on the history of Ukraine. Researchers from the Ukrainian Research Institute at Harvard University have launched a website where online resources with original research on Ukrainian history are posted. The project is named "Fontes: Open Access Sources on the History of Ukraine."

This was reported by the institute's press service.

"The name Fontes refers to the Latin word for “sources,” as our project aims to connect students, researchers, and the public with freely available primary resources for researching Ukraine’s past, from the prehistoric era through the twenty-first century."

Researchers noted that the project was created in response to the need to promote digital access to sources, as traditional access to archives was restricted due to the pandemic and Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The format of the project was based on the "Digital Research Guide on Soviet History" from the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies.

The Fontes project brings together various websites hosting primary sources on the history of Ukraine.

"Students, researchers, and curious members of the public can locate sources from the entire swath of Ukrainian history, from ancient Scythians to Kyivan Rus’, from the Cossack Hetmanate to the Soviet period and the twenty-first century revolutions and wars," the project authors noted.

Each collection contains online repositories of primary sources, including archival documents, books, periodicals, photographs, and films for use in original research.

Users can browse collections by various tags, including main categories, region, epoch, output format, keywords, and language.

Researchers will continue to add sources, and anyone interested can participate by filling out a special form on the website.
