The White House has responded to the recent incidents involving Russian drones violating the airspace of Romania and Latvia over the past weekend. John Kirby, Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the U.S. National Security Council, emphasized that these events highlight the threat posed by Russia.
According to the White House press service, Kirby stated that such incidents with Russian drones underscore the danger that Russia's war against Ukraine poses to the entire European continent.
Russian drones not only crossed the borders of NATO member countries but also fell on their territory.
"This is, unfortunately, not a new development, as it happened over the course of the war in Ukraine where missile fragments or drone fragments sometimes get caught up in the combat and the air combat and land in a neighboring nation," Kirby noted.
He added that the U.S. is closely monitoring such cases and is in close contact with allies and partners regarding the situation.
"But — but it’s just — it just underscores the — the danger that Mr. Putin’s war in Ukraine has now caused to the whole European continent and the fact that the security landscape has changed — not is changing, not will change, but actually has changed — which is why we’re doing everything we can to make sure Ukraine can defend itself," he emphasized.
During Russia's attack on Ukraine on the night of September 7-8, Russian drones breached Romanian airspace. It was later revealed that the drones also crossed into Latvian airspace. Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs announced that one drone crashed on Latvian territory after initially entering Belarus and then changing course towards Latvia.
