If the European Union declares its own strategic autonomy, it must continue to support Ukraine, and this support cannot stop by order of the new administration in the United States.
This was stated on Tuesday in the Italian city of Fucecchio-Anagni before the start of the G7 foreign ministers' meeting by EU High Representative Josep Borrell.
"We must continue to work to provide Ukraine with the support it needs. We, Europeans, act regardless of what Mr. Trump (Donald Trump, the elected U.S. president) wants to do. We have our own commitments and our own capabilities. When we say that we have strategic autonomy, the least we can say and do is continue to support Ukraine. We will not end this at Mr. Trump's command," Borrell emphasized.
He stressed that what the U.S. will do is certainly very important, but for its part, the EU must use all its own capabilities for the benefit of Ukraine's defense.
"The Ukrainian foreign minister is here to explain the situation. We will renew our engagement in support of Ukraine. This is the position of the European Union," Borrell added.
