The European Union will provide Ukraine with €1 billion in new aid, which will be directed toward the production of Ukrainian weapons.

This was announced by the EU’s new foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, according to dpa.

According to her, the new assistance from the EU is “a very important signal for Ukraine.”

Kallas made the announcement ahead of her visit to Lviv, intended to show solidarity with Ukraine as Russia prepares to hold its annual military parade commemorating “Victory Day.”

The parade in Moscow on Friday is expected to host many foreign guests, including Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

"I want to stress that all those who truly support peace cannot stand side-by-side with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin, who has started this full-scale war of aggression in Ukraine," Kallas said.

In addition to fresh military aid, Kallas is set to give her political endorsement in Lviv to the establishment of a special tribunal for war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.

"There will be no impunity. There will be accountability for the crimes committed," she said.

In Warsaw EU foreign ministers discussed different new measures against Russia including additional sanctions.

Kallas said she was hopeful that the EU could adopt a new set of sanctions in two weeks' time when foreign ministers are set to meet again in Brussels.
