In Kharkiv region, the number of underground schools is expected to reach 38 by the end of the year.
This was reported on Telegram by the head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration, Oleh Synehubov.
"We are building the largest number of underground schools in Ukraine — by the end of the year, there will be 38," Synehubov wrote.
According to him, these are safe spaces for more than 40,000 children.
"For comparison: last year, there were only 17,000. By January 1, 2026, we plan to transition another 40,000 children to offline or hybrid learning. That means a total of 80,000 children out of 200,000 school-aged students," Synehubov said.
He believes that underground schools will continue to be used even after the war.
"These are truly unique facilities that will not remain unused in peacetime. They provide additional educational spaces. Each facility has a dual purpose. In some settlements, we are building them where there was no certified bomb shelter at all — but the danger exists and will always remain," the regional head added.
In addition, the region is working on establishing an underground regional hospital, a rehabilitation center for children and veterans, and a new oncology hospital.
