NATO countries will not shoot down missiles and drones over Ukrainian territory, as such actions would drag them into a war with Russia.
This was reported by U.S. Deputy Defense Department Spokesperson Sabrina Singh.
According to her, the assistance provided by allies in shooting down Russian drones over Israel and similar actions in Ukraine are "two very different landscapes and battlefields."
Singh stated that U.S. President Joe Biden, from the very beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, "committed to providing Ukraine with what it needs on the battlefield." She added that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have been very successful in using air defense systems and other capabilities to continue reclaiming their territory.
"The Secretary of State just spoke with Mr. Umerov to get the latest updates from the battlefield and to better understand what additional forces and resources might be needed, if any. The President has committed that the United States will not put boots on the ground in Ukraine, but we support Ukraine in its efforts to reclaim its sovereign territory," she said.
When asked whether shooting down Russian targets from the territory of Romania or Poland could be considered as "boots on the ground," Singh responded that this would pull Western countries into the war.
"It would mean that we are being drawn into the war in another way. Right now, we believe that Ukraine has been able to successfully defend itself against Russian strikes on its cities, its population, and its infrastructure. And we will continue to provide them with the support they need to do so," the Pentagon spokesperson added.
