The Rivne Regional State Administration considered the possibility of implementing an investment proposal to create a biochar (bio-coal) production enterprise.

During a working meeting attended by Deputy Head of the RSA Oleksandr Kokhan and representative of the British company Tellus Conservation Jodie Bragger, technical details and requirements for locating the nature-oriented project were discussed.

The initiative involves using biomass waste from forestry and woodworking enterprises to produce biochar—a product that improves soil in organic farming.

“Rivne region is an ideal place for such a business. We have a unique combination of resources: forests in the north that provide raw materials, and agricultural lands in the south where biochar can be used effectively. This significantly reduces logistics costs and increases the project’s economic efficiency,” noted Oleksandr Kokhan.

The project envisages not only the production of bio-coal but also the use of thermal energy generated as a by-product.

“The production is a pilot project. After its launch, we will analyze the results and consider possibilities for scaling,” said Jodie Bragger.

Tellus Conservation is ready to annually process from 2,000 tons of biomass — wood chips, logging residues, grass, etc. The main requirements for the site location are no more than 50 km between the raw material source and production, connection to the power grid or proximity to a large heat consumer, and the possibility of supplying heat to the network.

During the discussion, emphasis was placed on the need to conduct an environmental impact assessment and obtain all necessary permits.
