On the night of August 4, a Ukrainian sea surface drone belonging to the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU) attacked the Russian-occupied landing ship "Olenegorsky Gornyak" in the port of Novorossiysk. The SSU confirmed this information to "Ukrainska Pravda."
The attack resulted in a "serious breach" in the ship, rendering it unable to carry out its combat tasks. The drone used in the strike was equipped with 450 kilograms of TNT. The targeted vessel was carrying approximately 100 occupants at the time of the attack.
The operation conducted by the SSU was carried out jointly with the Ukrainian Navy. Officially, the authorities have not yet confirmed this information.
The Mayor of Novorossiysk had previously claimed that the drone attack was supposedly repelled by the crews of the "Olenegorsky Gornyak" and "Suvorovets" ships. However, the SSU assured that the Ukrainian military operation was successful.
- Indeed, this is not the first time Ukrainian drones have targeted Russian Black Sea Fleet vessels. On May 24, 2023, two drones reportedly destroyed the Russian reconnaissance military vessel "Ivan Khurs". Such actions are part of the ongoing conflict and hostilities in the region.
- "Olenegorsky Gornyak" – the Russian large landing ship. It was constructed in Gdansk, Poland, in 1976 and is currently based in the Northern Fleet, being part of the 121st Brigade of landing ships. In 2007, it was regarded as the best landing ship in the Russian Northern Fleet.
