Any violator of European airspace must be prepared for retaliatory strikes.
This was stated by French President Emmanuel Macron to journalists ahead of the informal EU leaders’ summit in Copenhagen.
“Anyone who violates European airspace may face retaliatory strikes, because this is our right, and we will ensure respect for European space,” Macron said.
In his opinion, all the “air incidents” that have occurred in recent weeks in Poland, Romania, Estonia, and Denmark indicate that Europeans need effective early-warning systems and closer cooperation.
“In fact, we need to have early-warning systems to anticipate threats. They exist technically… We must deter the enemy with long-range strike capabilities, with European ballistic capabilities. We need more missile defense and anti-drone systems. So this is about innovation, but also about Europe’s production capacity,” he explained.
The French leader also mentioned European nuclear deterrence, which he called effective in “confrontation with Russia, which has been a very aggressive actor in our space for several years.”
Macron stressed that Europeans are already moving at an accelerated pace “to first of all help Ukraine, but also to develop increasingly effective anti-drone systems for themselves.”
