Italy’s proposal for security guarantees for Ukraine, similar to NATO’s Article 5, is currently the main focus on the allies’ negotiation table.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told La Repubblica:

“The Italian proposal, based on a mechanism inspired by NATO’s Article 5, is currently the main item on the negotiation table. It is a potential contribution to peace made by our country, and I think we should be proud of it,” Meloni said.

The Italian premier believes there is now a chance for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.

“Finally, after 3.5 years during which Russia showed no signs of dialogue and simply demanded Kyiv’s capitulation, a glimmer of hope for a negotiating path has appeared,” she noted.

According to Meloni, the situation changed thanks to several external and internal factors.

“These glimpses of hope became possible thanks, of course, to the initiative of the U.S. President, but even more so thanks to the heroic resistance of the Ukrainian people and the united support of Europe, despite public opinion, which was not always convinced,” added the Italian prime minister.

On August 18, a meeting took place at the White House between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders. The main topic was security guarantees for Ukraine.

Allies discussed the possibility of security guarantees similar to NATO’s Article 5 but outside the Alliance
