The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported a reduction in electrical capacity at Ukrainian nuclear power plants due to a Russian attack that damaged the country's energy infrastructure.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi noted that this creates additional pressure on nuclear safety, as stated in the Agency's report.

The Russian attack targeted substations crucial for the reliable operation of the Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, and South Ukraine nuclear power plants. Main power lines from four substations were disconnected, affecting the stability of energy supply.

Currently, only two of the nine active reactors are operating at full capacity, while the remaining six have reduced production to 40–90% capacity.

Rafael Grossi emphasized that the stability of the energy grid is key to the safety of nuclear facilities. He also underscored the importance of adhering to the seven fundamental nuclear safety principles, including ensuring reliable external power supply to nuclear plants.
