In Ukraine, a 22-year-old British volunteer named Samuel Newey, who had been fighting on the side of Ukrainian forces as part of a foreign battalion for over a year, has tragically died. This information was reported by BBC.
The news of the 22-year-old Samuel Newey's death from Birmingham was first shared by his brother Daniel.
"My little brother Sam was killed in action yesterday in Eastern Ukraine. I cannot put into words how broken I feel," he wrote on social media. "Sam you gave your life for people you never knew and acted with courage, morality and honour."
After studying psychology at the University of Birmingham, Sam made the decision to go and fight in Ukraine following the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
"He had just turned 21 when he decided to travel to Ukraine "to push back against Russian Imperialism," Daniel said in tribute to his brother.
It's noted that Samuel came to Ukraine as a member of a foreign volunteer combat unit known as the Dark Angels, formed by former paratrooper Daniel Berk. From the first days of the Russian invasion, this unit was engaged in fierce battles on the frontlines, stretching from Zaporizhzhia to Eastern Ukraine.
In 2020, Samuel and his father Paul faced terrorism charges due to Daniel's decision to join a Kurdish militia to fight against the Islamic State militants. However, all charges were later dropped
