A substantial batch of German Leopard 1 tanks has been acquired from the Belgian company OIP Land Systems by an undisclosed country, with the aim of expediting their delivery to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, according to Business AM.
Reportedly, the initial units will be sent to Ukraine after undergoing comprehensive refurbishment, a process that will involve transit through Germany and Italy. Additionally, these tanks will be upgraded with new weapon systems.
While the specific country responsible for procuring these tanks for Ukraine remains unidentified, the exact quantity of tanks has not been disclosed either. However, it is known that approximately 50 units were stored at the Turnhout facility, which is intended to serve as the source for the Leopard 1 tanks destined for shipment. Notably, all the Leopards within this batch were retired from active service several years ago and have since undergone thorough restoration.
