The UK Ministry of Defence’s intelligence has noted a continued upward trend in Russian casualties in the war against Ukraine in 2025.
British intelligence estimates Russia’s total losses since the start of its full-scale invasion in 2022 at approximately 950,000 killed and wounded.
According to the report, an estimated 160,000 of those losses occurred in just the first four months of 2025.
“If this rate of loss continues through the end of 2025, it will mark the deadliest year of the war for Russia in terms of personnel losses, continuing the trend of increasing annual casualties,” the review states.
The report also notes that Russian losses in April 2025 remain below the extremely high daily rates recorded in late 2024 but are still significant in the overall context of the conflict.
“So far in 2025, Russia has failed to translate its continued heavy losses into significant gains in Ukraine,” the UK Defence Intelligence concludes.
