Beer concern Carlsberg said it may significantly reduce or stop beer production in Poland due to a shortage of liquefied carbon dioxide.

Bloomberg reports this with reference to Beata Ptaszyńska-Jedynak, spokeswoman of the company's division in Poland.

The shutdown is due to the suspension of production at the country's largest chemical plants due to record natural gas prices. Shares in Carlsberg fell 2.6% in Copenhagen, extending earlier losses.

A final decision on the shutdown may have to be made in a few days, she said, adding that the shortage could also affect other companies.

Overall, Poland is a relatively small jurisdiction for Carlsberg, but the market is likely to see the risk of this phenomenon spreading to other European countries.

Carlsberg has three breweries in Poland and ranks third in the market with a share of 19.4%.
