The war destroyed the myth of the "second army of the world." There was another myth that Russian intelligence is on par with the CIA and Mossad. Considering the packs of diplomats being expelled around the world, Israeli military observer David Sharp in an interview with Unian, gave his opinion on how has been weakened Russian intelligence?

"I am inclined to believe that both the myth of the Russian army as the "second" army in the world and the myth of the Russian intelligence community as the "second" in the world, or something like that, were widespread among those who did not delve into. There were many confirmations even before the big war.

If we are talking about intelligence, take the story of Anna Chapman. The published wiretaps, namely, what they talked about, what they did, testified to a low level of professionalism, and amateurism and that they were stuck almost in the 30s or 50s, which struck me at the time. Since then, there have been many examples of unprofessional and amateurish actions. We can bring them endlessly. Regarding the army, too, enough. But you can't underestimate it. In some places, it is taken by quantity, in some places, quality is also present. For example, in terms of computer hacks and hacker attacks, it is generally accepted that this is a severe threat from the Russian intelligence community.

Legal residency at embassies is one of the important components of the work of Russian intelligence in Western Europe. So, on the one hand, the expulsion of these people, on the other hand, increased surveillance of those who were not expelled. Plus, what has previously turned a blind eye, today in many countries, they are not ready to endure. And to everything that concerns Russia, they are much more vigilant than before. All this together caused quite serious damage to the capabilities of Russian intelligence."
