Danish Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard has called for enhanced international coordination between intelligence services to ensure security at Europe’s ports.
He made the statement during a meeting of the European Ports Alliance taking place in Helsingør, according to DR.
“Just in Danish waters alone, hundreds of cargo ships pass through every single day. Many of them carry thousands of containers, which in total may hold millions of packages. Randomized inspections of this are a very large and complex task. Therefore, we need to work based on intelligence, collaborating and coordinating even more closely with our European colleagues,” the minister said.
The minister emphasized that effective control is only possible when based on intelligence data. He stated that even closer cooperation and coordination with European partners is needed to ensure safety and prevent potential threats.
The meeting is also attended by EU Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration Magnus Brunner, with whom Hummelgaard is discussing joint measures in this area.
