From today, the presidency of the EU passes from the Czech Republic to Sweden.
The Swedish Presidency is "crucial" to maintaining Ukraine's support, said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"Sweden assumes the chairmanship of the Council at a critical time. The Prime Minister of Sweden Ulf Kristersson, your leadership, will be decisive in keeping us united in support of Ukraine. You can count on me to advance your ambitious plan for our Union," she said and wished the country good luck.
During the first half of 2023, Sweden will lead the EU Council and represent all 27 member states in negotiations with other EU institutions.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has already congratulated the country on the start of the presidency of the EU Council.
"I congratulate the Prime Minister of Sweden on starting the Swedish Presidency of the EU Council. I wish you the successful implementation of the priorities of the Presidency! We look forward to furthering practical steps towards Ukraine's integration into the EU," he wrote on Twitter.
