Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy and Poland have reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine in resisting Russian aggression, as well as their readiness to provide robust security guarantees following a ceasefire or peace agreement.

This was stated in a joint declaration issued by the defence ministers of the five European countries (E5 format) following their meeting in Paris on 26 October.

"We will maintain our unwavering commitment to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression. Ukraine's ability to defend itself now and in the future is critically important to collective Euro-Atlantic security. We emphasise the need to continue supporting Ukraine by all available means – politically, militarily and financially," the statement reads.

The ministers also reaffirmed their determination to continue countering the activities of Russia's shadow fleet in accordance with international law and in coordination with partners.

In addition, the five countries expressed support for Ukraine's efforts to achieve a lasting peace backed by credible security guarantees.

"We stand united with Ukraine in its determination to achieve a lasting peace underpinned by robust security guarantees. The Coalition of the Willing will contribute to providing credible and effective security guarantees following a ceasefire or peace agreement," the document states.

The defence ministers of the five European countries separately emphasised that Russia represents the most acute and long-term threat to Euro-Atlantic security and stability.

According to the statement, Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, violations of NATO countries' airspace, acts of sabotage and the increasing use of hybrid attacks have not weakened Allied unity. On the contrary, they have strengthened the Allies' determination to defend NATO territory.

The statement also stresses that Europe must assume greater responsibility for its own security. To achieve this, European allies intend to strengthen their political and military leadership within NATO, modernise their armed forces and deepen defence-industrial cooperation based on common and standardised requirements.

At the same time, the ministers emphasised that the United States remains an indispensable ally and that its continued involvement in European security is essential to maintaining a strong and credible NATO.

The five countries also called for strengthening European defence capabilities within NATO and the European Union, stressing that EU initiatives should complement the Alliance's activities, avoid duplication and allow cooperation with NATO members that are not part of the European Union.
