The Ministry for the Reintegration of Occupied Territories of Ukraine, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), five regional state administrations, and twelve communities signed memorandums of cooperation on Friday, enabling the provision of affordable housing for displaced persons and war-affected individuals.
As reported by the IOM press service on Friday, the project, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany through the German Development Bank, entails the construction of up to 2,000 apartments for approximately 6,000 people in the cities of Khotyn and Chernivtsi in Chernivtsi region, Kolomyia in Ivano-Frankivsk region, Irpin and Gorenka village in Kyiv region, Ahronomichne, Ladihyn, and Khmilnyk in Vinnytsia region, Staryi Sambir, Drohobych, and Kamianka-Buzka in Lviv region.
Additionally, the last two communities will accommodate displaced persons from Severodonetsk in Luhansk Oblast, with whom a memorandum of understanding for the implementation of the housing project has also been signed.
"Housing will become accessible to internally displaced persons and vulnerable local populations through a rental mechanism developed and implemented within the project," the statement said.
The Ministry for the Reintegration of Occupied Territories will coordinate the project overall.
"According to the latest IOM data, one-fifth of internally displaced persons plan to stay and integrate into their current place of residence. Finding long-term housing solutions is essential for success... Legal and technical provisions tested within the affordable housing project may serve as a basis for further large-scale international assistance projects in the field of housing policy in Ukraine," noted Alessia Sciorilli, Head of the IOM Mission in Ukraine.
