Finland officially became a member of NATO on April 4, showing how they built a fence on the border with the Russian Federation. At the moment, preparatory work is being carried out.
Yle writes that the construction of the test fence showed that the established construction schedule is quite realistic. The next stage of arranging the border provides for constructing checkpoints on a section of 75 kilometers. Work will begin at the end of 2023.
It is noted that in 2024-2025, a road and a control system will be equipped at the border. In just a few years, about 200 kilometers of barriers will be built. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2026.
It is indicated that the goal of the project is to prevent unwanted border crossings. About 145 million euros were allocated for the border fence, and the project's total cost is 380 million euros.
- On November 17, 2022, it became known that the Finnish government intends to build a fence along the border with Russia. The project is planned to be implemented on a section of 260 out of 1,300 kilometers of the Russian border.
