Sustainable development has become a key principle in the rebuilding of Ukraine, as outlined in the Lugano Declaration and supported by the country's allies. This declaration envisions reconstruction in line with the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. An important aspect of this process is the principle of "build back better," aimed at enhancing the resilience of both the country and its communities while maintaining the path toward EU membership.

However, amid the recovery efforts, it is crucial to consider the significant ecological losses caused by the war. The widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure has led not only to humanitarian consequences but also to ecological disasters. Air pollution is another serious concern. Fires, smoke, and fumes caused by shelling, including fires in residential areas, have serious impacts on air quality. There have been numerous attacks on oil and gas depots and storage facilities and industrial plants and factories, causing toxic chemical fumes. Damaged sites contaminate the land, and emissions of carbon dioxide and other harmful substances exacerbate climate change. Restoring ecosystems and reducing the negative impact on the environment have become integral parts of the recovery process.

The Italian manufacturer of building chemical products, MAPEI Group, alongside its Ukrainian subsidiary, is focusing on developing solutions that prioritize environmental sustainability and the principles of a circular economy. Recognizing the pressing need for responsible practices, especially in the wake of the war and its ecological repercussions, the company is committed to creating products that minimize environmental impact. This commitment reflects a broader responsibility to people and the planet, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development for future generations.

The company has introduced a new product line—ZERO line—designed to reduce environmental impact without compromising quality. Research has shown that using more sustainable formulas and packaging significantly reduces CO2 emissions. All residual emissions are fully offset through forest protection projects. Among these products are Keraflex Maxi S1 Zero, a cementitious tile adhesive, Ultracolor Plus, a cementitious grout, and others that have already established themselves as carbon-neutral.

In response to the growing demand for eco-friendly construction materials, Mapei also strives to ensure good indoor air quality by obtaining certifications, such as EMICODE EC1PLUS, which confirms low levels of volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. In 2023, the number of GEV licenses increased by 14%, reflecting the company’s commitment to sustainable development.

Looking ahead, Mapei aims to further enhance its sustainability initiatives by setting ambitious targets for 2025, including increasing the use of renewable energy and expanding its portfolio of sustainable products. It is essential that such efforts not only support the country's recovery but also contribute to creating a safer and more sustainable future for all citizens of Ukraine.
