One of the most terrifying battles for the Ukrainian army in 2014 near Ilovaisk turned into the most significant tragedy. These events became a crucial lesson that any compromise with Putin is a trap.

This was stated by Kyrylo Budanov, Chief of the Main Intelligence Directorate.

Addressing military intelligence personnel, Budanov reminded them that August 29 is an important date for each of them – the Day of Remembrance for defenders who died fighting for Ukraine's independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.

"Today marks ten years since Ukraine was shocked by the horrific news of the treacherous shooting of Ukrainian soldiers whose path passed through a sunflower field. Therefore, the sunflower has become the traditional symbol of this memorial day," noted Budanov.

The intelligence chief recalled the fierce battles between Ukrainian defenders and Russian invaders near Ilovaisk over a month and the so-called "green corridor" that turned into a death road for hundreds of soldiers and volunteers.

"Russian forces violated agreements and opened fire to destroy, shooting down Ukrainian columns in march. Hundreds of soldiers and volunteers died, and dozens went missing. These events served as a huge lesson – Putin cannot be trusted under any circumstances; any compromise with him is a trap," Budanov reminded.

On August 18-19, 2014, Ukrainian forces took control of most of the city of Ilovaisk. In response, Russia sent 8 battalion tactical groups, manned by regular Russian soldiers, to the area. As a result, Ukrainian units found themselves encircled. On the night of August 29, the oRussian forces offered them to exit the encirclement via so-called "green corridors" without weapons. After the Ukrainians began to leave Ilovaisk, Russian soldiers and their mercenaries opened fire.
