French President Emmanuel Macron outlined three main messages concerning Ukraine upon his arrival in Kyiv as part of the "coalition of the willing."
In a post on Twitter (X), Macron wrote:
"Upon returning to Kyiv, my first thoughts were with the Ukrainian people. For more than three years, you have resisted with admirable courage—for your land, your freedom, for Europe. Because, yes, the security of our continent is at stake here."
According to Macron, the response to Russian aggression must be collective, which is why he traveled together with leaders from Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom.
1. Peace
Macron stressed that peace must come first—and that it must be just and lasting, beginning with a complete and unconditional ceasefire.
"This is the proposal we are putting forward together with the United States. Ukraine accepted it on March 11. Russia, however, delays, sets conditions, buys time, and continues its war of conquest," he reminded.
If Moscow continues to block peace, he warned,
"we as Europeans, in close coordination with the United States, will increase the pressure."
He welcomed President Biden’s call to take this step, adding,
"Our unity is our strength. That is also the meaning of this visit: we all want peace!"
2. Sovereignty
Macron emphasized that any peace agreement must guarantee Ukraine’s security.
"This is what we’ve been working on in meetings in Paris, London, and now in Kyiv. We are moving forward together," he said.
3. Future
He also highlighted that Ukraine is fighting not only for its own people but also for the European ideal.
"A free, strong, prosperous, and European Ukraine is our goal. History is watching us," Macron concluded.
