The Ukrainian defense industry is working on a long-range version of the Neptun missile system.
In an interview with ArmiaInform, Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Ivan Havryliuk, disclosed that efforts are underway to create a so-called "long-range Neptun." This involves the development of a new modification of the domestic cruise missile.
"Work is currently underway to create the so-called 'long Neptun.' It involves a new modification of the missile. Active work is also being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Strategic Industries to strengthen the air defense system," said the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine.
The Ministry of Defense representative did not provide details about the new long-range missile and its purpose. Initially, the RK-360MC Neptun complex was designed to target enemy warships. Now, it seems that there is a focus on a version of the R-360 cruise missile for targeting ground-based objectives.
The official stated that Ukraine has developed a satellite-guided targeting system for missiles, directing the missile towards a pre-determined target. In the final stage of the flight, the missile's infrared guidance system searches for and locks onto the target based on a previously loaded image.
