The Ministry of Ecology, in collaboration with the State Water Agency and Korean water sector experts, has identified the Kozarovych Dam in Kyiv region as a pilot project for the restoration of Ukraine's water infrastructure.
This initiative is a continuation of the cooperation initiated by the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ruslan Strilchuk, and the Minister of Environment of Korea, Han Hwa-Jin, within the framework of the SOR28 Summit and the "Peace and Solidarity Initiative in Ukraine" program announced by the President of the Republic of Korea during his visit to Kyiv last year.
The Kozarovych Dam was damaged in the early days of the full-scale invasion and had defensive significance for protecting the city of Kyiv. It now requires urgent restoration, with an estimated cost of $14 million. Two Korean companies, K-Water and KOICA, will assist in the restoration efforts.
According to the First Deputy Minister Olexander Krasnolutsky, restoring the Kozarovych Dam will help protect the settlements along the Irpin River downstream from the Kyiv Reservoir against flooding.
In addition to the Kozarovych Dam project, the Korean companies will provide assistance in implementing projects related to water supply for the population of Mykolaiv region, reconstruction and major repairs of the engineering infrastructure of the Dnipro-Donbas Canal Management, and improvement of water quality monitoring in Ukraine.
