Following a series of Russian drones, including Shahed attack drones, being shot down in its airspace, Romania has decided to recall its ambassador to Moscow for consultations and expel a Russian diplomat from Bucharest.
The announcement was made by Romania's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement posted on X on Monday, July 27.
"The Romanian side highlighted that the Russian Federation bears exclusive responsibility for all these grave incidents and for the deterioration of the regional security environment. During the meeting, an official Note Verbale was handed to the Russian Ambassador, notifying the decision to declare a member of the mission of the Russian Federation in Bucharest undesirable, requiring them to leave Romanian territory within 5 days," the ministry said.
In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled Romania's ambassador to the Russian Federation to Bucharest for consultations.
The ministry added that Romania will continue to closely coordinate its actions with its NATO and EU allies and partners, while remaining firmly committed to taking all necessary measures to protect its national security and its citizens.
It noted that the Russian diplomat was shown fragments of a drone destroyed on Romanian territory, whose components, according to an official investigation by the prosecutor's office, were confirmed to be of Russian origin.
"During the meeting, the Romanian side expressed its firm protest against these illegal and irresponsible actions and emphasized the clear attribution of responsibility," the ministry added.
The ministry also emphasized that the continued violation of Romania's airspace, which is also the airspace of NATO and the European Union, is absolutely unacceptable.
