Russia is being stripped of its membership in the Danube Commission due to its missile and drone strikes on the Lower Danube in Ukraine.
Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba announced this on Twitter.
The decision was made during the 100th-anniversary meeting of the Danube Commission chaired by Ukraine. It is also based on a resolution from March 17, 2022, which banned Russians from participating in all meetings and excluded them from the Commission's secretariat.
Russia has been instructed to leave the organization by February 29, 2024. If Moscow fails to comply, the members of the Danube Commission will not recognize their obligations to Russia under the Belgrade Convention on the regime of navigation on the Danube.
The Danube Commission is an international organization established by the Convention on the Regime of Navigation on the Danube, signed in Belgrade on August 18, 1948. Its members include Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, Germany, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Croatia.
