The European Commission has extended the “Support to the Transport Development of the Dnieper River” project until the end of 2027.
This was reported by the Ministry for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.
“The European Commission has extended the European Union international technical assistance project ‘Support to the Transport Development of the Dnieper River’ for a new 18-month period (Phase 4). In early June, the relevant contract was signed between the European Commission and a consortium consisting of Ecorys Nederland B.V. and Nestra B.V.,” the statement said.
The next phase of the project, which will run until the end of 2027, envisages further harmonization of Ukrainian legislation with EU directives and regulations in the field of inland waterway transport. It is also expected to support Ukraine in obtaining EU-level recognition of its new qualification system for inland navigation vessel crews.
As part of the cooperation, digital registers of vessels and qualification documents will be created, the administrative capacity of relevant authorities will be strengthened, and other measures will be implemented.
According to Deputy Minister for Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine Andrii Kashuba, with the expert support of the European Union, Ukraine has already developed and adopted key regulatory acts that have systematically brought Ukrainian river navigation closer to European standards—from the basic Law on Inland Water Transport to the introduction of European vessel identification systems, river information services, and modern requirements for crew qualifications.
