Military counterintelligence of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSU), with the assistance of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, uncovered another agent of Russian military intelligence (commonly known as the GRU) within the Defense Forces.
The agent was identified as a pilot-instructor, a major in one of the Ukrainian Air Force brigades. The unit where this individual served carries out combat missions to shoot down Russian missiles and drones, as well as engage ground targets in support of the Ukrainian army’s air operations.
The investigation revealed that the agent was carrying out several hostile tasks simultaneously.
First, he transmitted information to prepare new Russian missile and drone attacks against Air Force facilities. Priority targets for the Russian forces included airfields hosting F-16, Mirage 2000, and Su-24 aircraft.
The agent collected coordinates of these aircraft locations, flight schedules, and the sequence of their takeoffs.
Additionally, to ensure the success of Russian strikes, the agent prepared and provided the Russian forces with an analytical report outlining what he considered necessary tactics for conducting combined strikes. This was intended to allow Russian forces to bypass the defenses of the relevant military facilities.
Second, the agent passed to Russian military intelligence personal data of Ukrainian pilots, aircraft tail numbers, their armaments, and combat sortie tactics.
To maintain secrecy, the agent communicated with a Russian intelligence officer via an anonymous email channel and used “secret chats” in messaging apps.
SSU officers documented the agent’s crimes and detained him after he attempted to gather “a new batch” of information.
Investigators plan to formally charge the detainee under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (state treason committed under martial law). The perpetrator faces life imprisonment with confiscation of property.
The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the SSU in Ivano-Frankivsk region under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Defense Prosecutor’s Office of the Western Region.
