SSU captured a "reawakened" FSB agent who spent over a year on standby at the border of Chernihiv region. Since October 2023, following Russian orders, he gathered intelligence on the Ukrainian forces' deployment in the region, focusing on the coordinates of Ukrainian military headquarters and locations of personnel and equipment concentrations. The obtained information was suspected to be used for artillery strikes on Ukraine's border and covert operations. The arrest occurred during the agent's mission near a potential site of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to the investigation, the perpetrator is a 20-year-old resident of the Novhorod-Siverskyi community, who was recruited by the FSB in March 2022 during the temporary occupation of part of the region.
He received the operational alias "Jester" and instructions for conducting intelligence and subversive activities for the aggressor country.
After the occupiers fled Chernihiv region, they left their collaborator behind and placed him on standby within the region.
In October of this year, the traitor's "curator," a personnel officer from the FSB's border management in the Bryansk region, contacted him and assigned reconnaissance tasks.
To fulfill these tasks, the defector traveled around the region in his private car, capturing on his mobile phone camera potential locations of the Armed Forces.
He transmitted the acquired information to the aggressor through a specially created email inbox, deleting all messages immediately after their reading by the FSB representative for conspiratorial purposes.
For the completed tasks, the Russian intelligence agency promised the defector a monetary reward.
During the search at the detainee's place of residence, evidence of unlawful activities was found.
The suspect has been remanded in custody as a preventive measure, facing the possibility of life imprisonment.
