The Security Service of Ukraine located fragments of the Russian ballistic missile used to strike Lviv region on the night of January 8–9, 2026. Preliminary analysis identifies the components as belonging to the “Oreshnik” missile system.
Recovered parts include:
- the guidance and stabilization unit (essentially the missile’s “brain”);
- components of the engine system;
- fragments of the orientation mechanism;
- nozzles from the separation block platform.

The fragments have been designated as evidence and will undergo detailed expert examination.
SSU investigators classify the use of this weapon against civilian infrastructure as a war crime committed by Russia. Preliminary data indicate the missile, a medium-range “ground-to-ground” system, was launched from the Kapustin Yar testing range.
By targeting civilian objects near the EU border, Russia attempted to destroy critical regional infrastructure amid worsening weather conditions. Investigators are identifying all circumstances, organizers, and perpetrators to hold them accountable.
